On September 9, the varsity field hockey team began their season with a 2-1 loss against Winters Mill. Although the team fell short in goals, they dominated both halves by moving the ball strategically from the left side of the field to the right.
The first half ended with no score from either team, but with four shots on goal by the Lancers and six shots on goal by the Falcons.
The second half began with a goal by the Falcons. Although this brought an early disadvantage, the Lancers gained several advantages throughout the half with five green cards awarded to Falcon players. As the timer ticked, the game grew more physical.
After another goal was scored by the Falcons, the Lancers received a corner, inserted by junior midfielder Sierra Rossman. Senior midfielder Ashley Ridgely received the insert and drove towards post where Carmen Wilhelm, a sophomore attacker, finished the play by putting the ball in the cage.
During the second half the Lancers had six official shots on goal and many brilliant plays. Junior defense Ella Haskins believes that this is only the beginning for the team.
“Our team shows great potential with our speed and determination, so I truly do believe the sky’s the limit. I feel that we were up against some great competition, but we came up just short,” said Haskins.
Head Coach Mary Cate Henry agreed with Haskins.
“It wasn’t the outcome we had hoped, but we played hard and with heart. The team didn’t stop believing in themselves and each other. This game will drive us to be better.”
The Lancers will play their next game on Thursday, September 12, against the FSK Eagles at FSK. The varsity game will start at 4:00 and the JV game will begin at 5:30.
