Girls lacrosse hope for a building year this season
January 22, 2018
Girls lacrosse is a sport that many people love to watch and play. Last season the JV team had a record of 6 wins and 5 losses. They excelled in their defensive skills, but there was room to improve with their offense. Varsity had a record of 2 wins and 13 losses. Unfortunately, Varsity lost in the first round of playoffs, but they hope to make it further this season.
This season looks good for both teams. There are many girls who are new and are eager to learn about the sport. There are also many returning players who are a vital part of a winning season. Last season, Varsity lost to Middletown in first round of playoffs. This did not come as a big shock as Middletown had an .
This new season is also coming with new varsity and JV coaches. Brooke Wilson is going to be coaching the girls varsity team, and she is still interviewing JV coaches.
Wilson is Frederick born. She played high school lacrosse at St. Johns at Prospect Hall. Through her high school years, Wilson received several honors. Wilson was the two-year captain nominee, member of the All-County Team, and voted Frederick’s Offensive Player of the year. Wilson attended the Division I University of Richmond.
Lacrosse the Nations is a program that Wilson worked for in Nicaragua. She developed programs, ran practices, and trained local coaches. She also started the first girls-only lacrosse program in Nicaragua. With all of her successes, Wilson will be a fresh addition to the program.
Wilson said, “I cannot express how excited I am for the start of our spring season. Linganore lacrosse has had a record number of girls show interest in playing this year, as well as a strong group of seniors to help lead the way. It is clear to see the new and raw talent both new and seasoned players have. The energy behind our approaching season is easy to feel and can only lead to increased success this spring.”
Many of the lacrosse girls who are hoping to be on the team have been doing pre-season work. This includes True Athletic Performance, an hour-long speed and agility training session at the school. Players who want to be prepared for the skills portion of lacrosse have been welcomed to attend a captain’s practice. This is a 30-minute session run by the senior players on the team. This includes Adriana D’Amore, Shea Stewart, Lily Esienhart, and Anna Young.
Sophomore player Clare Beiter said, “I am really excited for the season. All of the skills and conditioning stuff we have been doing not only helps our skills, but also it is creating a bond between all of the players before the season even starts.”
The girls will focus on more teamwork for both varsity and JV. There will also be two assistant coaches for varsity, Alexis Truxillo and Georgianna Porter. There is also a winter indoor league for both JV and varsity. Porter also coaches at the indoor league. These are hour-long games that really help the girls get ready for tryouts and the spring season.
