Urbana High School has a new journalism teacher, Mrs. Kristin Johnson.  October 30, she visited Lancer Media to learn more about setting up her new class. She was accompanied by Mrs. Phyllis Younkins who is a teacher specialist for professional learning. Johnson came in to learn about how Lancer Media works as a team to produce the best material possible.

Editor Ethan Hart said, “I enjoyed showing the Urbana adviser how we run our paper, and I wish them success in the future.”

All levels of students and Mrs. Natalie Rebetsky taught the visitors all about Lancer Media, including the story process, staff responsibilities the use of social media, and layout and design.

Each group was assigned a topic to teach the visitors. The students worked in small groups and demonstrated their expertise using visuals and computers.  They helped Johnson understand the basics of Lancer Media so she will be able to use some strategies and methods to build their program.

Johnson said, “The biggest thing I learned is the importance of giving more responsibility to the students the longer they have been in journalism.”

Layout Editor Sammie Hoefs said, “Layout is a tough process, and we have perfected it here. I was happy to help them in every way by giving them examples and tips.”
