Rozmia Fattah leads from behind the scenes
May 22, 2017
Rozmia Fattah is a seventeen year old junior who is capable of doing anything she sets her mind to. Fattah is a stellar student, a strong leader, a kind friend, and overall an amazing person.
One of the most impressive things about Fattah is her academic accomplishments. She holds a 4.0 unweighted GPA, has taken a multitude of both AP and Dual Enrollment classes, and is in several honor societies, clearly what makes these accomplishments all the more valuable is how hard Fattah works for them. She is always someone who stays on top of her schedules even if she has a ton of work on her plate, and is consistently willing to go the extra mile for the sake of her studies.
Fattah said, “I feel proud of what I’ve done, but they are things that anyone can do if they put their minds to it. I think you can always strive to be better, you’re never at the top of your game.”
Fattah said that her favorite class was calculus because, “It’s a complicated course so when you finally grasp the concepts you feel really good about yourself. It’s rewarding. It’s a self-esteem booster.”
Math is certainly one of Fattah’s strong suits. She is a member of Mu Alpha Theta, and she won the math departmental award at last year’s awards ceremony.
Fattah is not only spectacular in school, but in her activities after school as well. This year she was wing-head for The Addams Family and she will be stage manager for one of next year’s shows. So far in her high school career, she has done tech for every single show. She was the only freshman on tech for her first show.
Fattah said, “[It was] Terrifying. It felt really intimidating, and I wasn’t sure if I should keep doing it, but for some reason I decided to come back. At first it felt really scary, but as more people in my grade joined in, it got easier and more fun for me. I also liked being a part of something. It felt good to contribute to something bigger.”
Fattah added, “You’re responsible for so many people, and you have to multitask and keep track of so many people at the same time. At the same time, if you’re capable of doing all those things at once you feel very accomplished.”
Being a wing-head means being responsible for the entire wing which includes props, cues, curtains, and of course, people. The job is not an easy one, and must be done by someone level-headed and capable. For The Addams Family Fattah was both of those things and more, working together with everyone else on stage to make the show a success.
Previous stage manager, Martha Madrid, said, “Rozmia has always been so devoted to tech, and she’s always shown herself to be trustworthy. I trust her to be a strong leader, and I know she’s going to do a wonderful job as stage manager. She’s always stood out as a hard worker, volunteering for the jobs no one else wants to do and always asking how she can help. She’s one of the nicest people I know. She’ll be a strong leader without being a dictator. The theater department is going to be in good hands.”
What stands out the most about Fattah, though, is her heart. She is kind to everyone she meets, always willing to step into another’s shoes in situations where others would refuse. Her mind is never limited. Instead, it is open and always ready to see things from a new perspective. Rather than practicing reckless optimism, she is intelligent in her outlook on life, always knowing that even if a positive attitude isn’t enough to fully repair a situation, it is enough to improve it exponentially. Fattah said, “I think optimism is a good trait because it doesn’t really do you any good to dwell on mistakes or negativity. As cliche as it sounds, looking on the brighter side really does make situations better. Having a better attitude can really change a lot about your surroundings, even in the worst situations.”
As for her future, Fattah has bounced back and forth among many futures: artist, author, and, even, figure skater (when she was younger.) With a mind and personality as wonderful as she has though, it is clear that whatever path Fattah chooses, she will thrive.
