There has been a tradition in Frederick County Public Schools that students are given the Thursday during fair week off school. The Fair runs for a week, but students get in free on this day. Although there was a Board of Education discussion about cutting the day this year because of pushing back school until after Labor Day, students still enjoyed their Fair Day.

The Frederick Fair turned 155 years old this year. The fair’s purpose is to educate the community, especially the young, about the importance of the agriculture industry.

A popular exhibit, that always has a constant flow of traffic is the Milky Way. This exhibit has dairy cows along with information and fun facts about the milk they produce. All six of the dairy breeds are on display,  and their owners are ready to answer any questions.

There is also a Birthing Center at the fair, which attracts quite the crowd. The Birthing Center allows the crowd an up close look at farm animals giving birth and caring for the babies after they’re born. This year there was a pregnant cow that was the spotlight.

Cattle are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all of the farm animals visitors can see. There are also goats, sheep, pigs, horses, ducks, chicken, rabbits and more.

“My family and I go to the Fair on Fair Day every year. My favorite thing by far is going around looking at all the animals,” said Jordan Nicolet, a member of the cCass of 2018.

Students still have until Sunday, September 24th to enjoy this year’s Great Frederick Fair. Adult tickets are eight dollars and children under 10 are admitted free. (Parking is not included.)

Celebrate the fair’s 155th birthday now!
