LHSsees2020: Rachel Huston goes from ‘Fear the Spear’ to ‘Fear the Turtle’
Fear the turtle, fearless learner
“I was basically born into the traditions [of University of Maryland.] I grew up on that campus,” said Rachel Huston.
Huston has been sporting ‘Fear the Turtle’ and ‘Testudo’ decorated sweatshirts, t-shirts, pants, and hats for as long as she can remember.
“I wanted to follow in my parents’ footsteps,” Huston said.
While pride and tradition were important aspects in her decision, Huston also recognized the opportunities the university has to offer.
“I’m in the Scholars’ Program, which makes the huge campus seem a bit smaller by grouping me with kids that have the same interests as mine. My group is Science, Discovery and the Universe.”
Huston plans to study history or archaeology in order to later succeed at her dream job as a Smithsonian curator.
“There are also so many internship opportunities being so close to D.C.,” Huston added. “I’m honestly most excited to learn so much with people who want to learn just as much as I do. I want to be engulfed in new experiences and go outside my comfort zone.
