Through the entire month of November, students in Mr. Patrick Greene’s Introduction to Engineering Design classes have been working on building virtual toy trains.

The students used an intricate computer software program, Inventor, to build the train parts and ultimately assemble each of them together. Inventor allows users to create 2-D sketches of objects with correct measurements and then extrude it into a 3-D model.

The software program could easily virtually create any kind of object. For this project, Inventor was clearly needed.

In order to build the toy train, each student had to build the individual parts on Inventor. The required parts included the train body, the cab, the wheels, the smoke stack, and more.

After building each part, students used the Assembly setting on Inventor to easily place each part together.

Dylan Hosein, a member of the Class of 2019 and a student in one of Greene’s IED classes, said, “This train project is very intricate and complicated at some parts. Having to build each individual piece and then put them all together was challenging and fun at the same time.”
