On Monday, January 11, Linganore High School held academic planning night where current students, parents, and incoming freshmen can  learn about classes they can take in 2016-2017.

The assembly for incoming freshmen was held in the theater, where Principal Kehne, presented a 30-minute PowerPoint. After the assembly, teachers explained to students and parents what classes and options are offered. Academic subjects were explained in the cafeteria, and elective displays were in the main gym.

“We invite folks from all over the county so people everywhere can learn about their options,” said Mr. Greg Keller, assistant principal. The Career and Technology Center also had a large demonstration.  Students can take a half day program off campus to learn more specialized career skills, like welding, nursing and cosmetology.  Some programs even offer employment and certification.

Frederick Community College (FCC) offers dual enrollment classes, and representatives were present. Dual enrollment is where a high school student, normally a junior or senior, can take a class and get college credit. Some of these classes are taught on the LHS campus. When these dual enrollment classes are taught on college grounds, it’s generally referred to as open campus.

“With traditional open campus, classes are at FCC. Other classes are taught here,” said Assistant Principal Greg Keller. There is a significant cost savings to families if the student takes the course at LHS.

The elective teachers bring out their best.  Veterinary science displayed live animals. The art department also had students and teachers displaying their best work.

Overall, this planning night helped parents and students learn about their career and course choices.  Registration for courses will begin in early February.
