Congratulations to Kevin Lloyd for being recognized for his music education achievements! On April 16th, Lloyd received the Outstanding Music Teacher Award from the Maryland Music Educators Association. This annual award ceremony took place at the Turf Valley Conference Center in Ellicott City.

The Maryland Music Educators Association is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide professional development for music teachers, opportunities for excellence for music students and teachers, and to serve as an advocate for music education in schools.

Lloyd instructs the Marching, Symphonic, and Concert Bands, Percussion, Jazz, and Guitar Ensembles, and courses in Music Theory and Technology.

His instruction has allowed these groups to win five Region Championships in Tournament of the Bands, more than a dozen state championships, and they have performed in places such as New York City, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and Disney World.

This is not the first time Lloyd has been recognized for his achievements. In 1998 he received the Golden Lance Award for Character in Education. He also received the 2004 Washington Post Agnes Meyer Teacher of the Year award. Finally, he was labeled one of “50 Directors Who Make A Difference In American Schools” by School Band and Orchestra Magazine.

“Mr. Lloyd has helped teach all of us things about music, but even moreso he has helped us learn a thing or two about ourselves and how to treat each other. He is one of my favorite teachers, and without him I never would have grown as a musician,” said Class of 2019 marching band member Makayla Christy.

Before teaching at Linganore, Lloyd studied at West Virginia University, Johns Hopkins University, and Loyola College of Maryland and obtained his Bachelor and Masters degrees in Music.

Lloyd has performed with Percussion ‘80, Pittsburgh Opera Theater, Millbrook Symphony Orchestra, Allen Ambush Jazz Quartet, and Miltenberger Jazz Quintet.  He also performed in eight concert tours of Europe and Japan.

Lloyd has also shined as a theatrical sound designer. He has composed music for over 100 plays to be performed at the Contemporary American Theater Festival, AmeriCulture Festival, Lansdowne Street Playhouse Boston, Smithsonian Discovery Theater, and Maryland Ensemble Theater. He has also been credited for the productions of The Mint, Here, Actor’s Loft, Primary Stages, Theater for the New York City, and the Abingdo.

“Mr. Lloyd is honestly the best music teacher I have ever had. He commands respect from his students, and he gets it because it is clear to us he knows what he’s doing. He takes music seriously, but he is a great person to just talk to,” said Class of 2019 band member Avalon Gravley.
