Which woman should be on the $10?

It’s no doubt that women of the United States have been underrepresented in official government positions.

Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew has decided that the new ten dollar note should feature a woman to represent a “champion of inclusive democracy.”

The decision to put a woman on a dollar bill was prompted by a movement in March 2015 by the nonprofit organization Women on 20s, who sought to replace Andrew Jackson’s face. They created their own poll, and 600,000 votes later, Harriet Tubman emerged as the winner.

By the year 2020, the 100th anniversary of the passing of the Nineteenth Amendment that gave women the right to vote, a female face will replace Alexander Hamilton on the ten-dollar bill, instead of Jackson. Lew says that it is a “happy coincidence” that private campaigns pushed for a change at the same time that the ten dollar bill was already being redesigned.
