Top 10 2015: Movies you don’t want to miss
December 24, 2015
Whether it’s animated movies for younger kids or scary movies for adults, many head to the movie theaters over the winter break.
These are the top 10 movies of 2015 that blew away the box office ratings this year. These are the movies everyone raced to go see.
Obliviously after I wrote this top 10 story Star Wars:The Force Awakens had been released on December 18th and it has blown the box office ratings record, already grossing $238,000,000 (making it currently the #7 spot on the box office hits of this year). Excluding Star Wars these are the top 10 highest grossing movies of 2015.
10.) Spectre
007 takes this number 10 spot. Released on November 6th, it grossed $192,836,132 in box offices. Being a James Bond movie fan, I was excited to see this movie. However, this movie didn’t meet the expectations I had. Of course, Spectre had action and adventure (being a James Bond movie), but it didn’t live up to the standards of 2012 hit box office James Bond movie Skyfall (which was #4 on box office hits in 2012). It only scored a 64% on Rotten Tomatoes (a website that is dedicated to critiquing movies.) It still was a good movie overall but if Sony is planning on releasing another James Bond movie it better be as good as Skyfall.
9.) Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation
This action packed thriller staring Tom Cruise takes the number 9 spot. Released on July 14th it grossed a total of $195,042,377 in box offices and scored a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. This movie was fantastic as it follows Ethan Hunt as he tries to defeat a deadly organization that plans terrorist attacks. This movie is filled with action that gets your adrenaline pumping. If you were a fan of any other Mission Impossible movies or is a fan of action adventure movies, I would strongly suggest watching this movie.
8.) Cinderella
This classic animated fairy-tale remake into real life earned the number 8 spot. Released on March 3rd it grossed $201,151,353 in theaters and received a 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. I loved the 1950’s Disney classic Cinderella, and I absolutely loved this remake. It followed the same plot and it was very cool seeing the animated version come to life. I recommend anyone who enjoyed watching the classic Disney Cinderella to watch this movie, you will be pleased with it.
7.) The Martian
Andy Weir’s famous book to movie adaption captures the number 7 spot. Released on October 2nd it is grossing $223,544,423 in box offices and got a successful 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Although I have not read the book (which I really want to) the plot of the film was easy to follow. It was a great space adventure that kept me on the edge of my seat for the full 2 hours and 22 minutes. If you love space thrillers I would highly recommend this movie. If you want to read a great review of this movie read my fellow journalism student’s Ryan Bond’s review.
6.) The Hunger Games: Part 2
This book trilogy to film earned the number 6 spot. Released on November 23rd it is grossing $250,338,774 in box offices and received a mediocre 70% on Rotten Tomatoes. I will admit after watching Hunger Games: Part 1 last year in theaters I thought it was rather boring. I convinced myself to watch part 2 however and I am glad I did because part 2 is amazing. It is filled with action and adventure and emotions all in one movie. This was a great ending to the Hunger Games franchise and anyone who is a Hunger Games fan is encouraged to see this film.
5.) Minions
America’s favorite little annoying yellow guys stole spot #5. Released on July 20th it is grossing $336,045,770 in box offices and it poorly scored a 55% on Rotten Tomatoes. This prequel to the 2010 hit movie Despicable Me was a disaster. I loved Despicable Me and when I found out they were making a movie just about the minions I was very excited. However this movie was boring and the minions were annoying. The plot to the movie was dissatisfying and I didn’t find it funny at all. Let’s just cross our fingers and hope they don’t make a Minions 2.
4.) Furious 7
This seventh installment of everyone’s favorite street car racing movies made the number 4 spot. Released on April 3rd it grossed a total of $353,007,020 in theaters and scored a 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. I have been a Fast and Furious fan since the first movie and I very much enjoyed this movie. This movie is fast paced and filled with action and adventure. It was sad however watching the late Paul Walker in the movie knowing it would be his last Fast and Furious movie. Any Fast and Furious movie fans or anyone who loves action movies should watch this movie. Bring a box of tissues though, the ending makes me emotional every-time.
3.) Inside Out
This enjoyable Pixar movie made the top 3. Released on June 19th it grossed a total of $356,461,711 in box offices and an outstanding 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Pixar did it again by making a movie that everyone loves. This movie made me laugh and smile because it is so funny and interesting. It follows a girl named Riley and her emotions (joy, sadness, disgust, fear and anger) and their journey throughout Riley’s mind and they teach her how to feel. Anyone (no matter the age) who enjoys Pixar movies should greatly consider watching Inside Out.
2.) Avengers: Age of Ultron
Super hero fanatics are pleased to see this movie take the number 2 spot. Released on May 1st it grossed $459,005,868 in box offices and received a 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. Honestly before I saw this movie I had never seen a Marvel movie or even a superhero movie in general, so I didn’t know what to expect. Of course I was a little confused because I didn’t know the characters or their backgrounds but other than that I found the movie interesting. I liked the action and adventure in the movie and thought it had a decent plot. However movie critics and Avenger movie fans did not think it lived up to the 2012 movie The Avengers (which scored an impressive 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.) Overall I thought it was a decent movie and suggest the Marvel movie fans or super hero movie fans should watch this movie.
1.) Jurassic World
This prehistoric meets modern era action adventure took the number 1 spot. Released on June 12th it grossed an outstanding $652,270,625 (making it the 3rd movie that grossed the highest amount of all time) and received only a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. I saw this movie over the summer in IMAX 3D and it was amazing because I actually felt as though I was in the presence of actual dinosaurs. The movie got my adrenaline pumping and my nerves on edge. It has many action scenes that I very much enjoyed. On the contrary many people are questioning the movie’s originality. I do agree this movie is very similar to the movie Jurassic Park (of course somehow the dinosaurs escape and terrorize people…go figure.) However I do believe the graphics and the characters make up for it the somewhat repetitive plot. Anyone looking for an action filled movie who doesn’t have a phobia of dinosaurs should watch this film.
