Mrs. Samantha Servey’s English 12 class has organized a service project they named Lancers Make it Happen. It is a research/persuasive project for Studies and Composition class to benefit poor and underprivileged students in LHS’s feeder elementary schools.

Poverty is very familiar to many in Frederick County. In fact, as of 2009, 12.1% of Frederick County residents had an income below poverty level, and 11.8% of children in Frederick Countyqwere living below poverty level. A 2014 survey shows the homeless population is down 11% since 2013 when one in 1,000 Frederick County residents was homeless.

The class hopes to spread the word about the project and fundraise throughout the months of April-May. Class members are working in committees and a presented their plans to the administration this week.

The class is asking for donations such as: jump ropes, erasers, sunscreen, pencils, notebooks, folders, frisbees, chalk, band aids, puzzle books, and bubbles to fill backpacks for children who are victims of poverty.

Lancers Make it Happen plan to hold a major fundraiser on April 26 with an auto show to raise money and collect supplies for the cause. One car, truck, and motorcycle will be chosen as best in show, and each will receive a cash prize.
