Animals 101 donates to the Frederick Humane Society
March 24, 2015
The March club day meeting for Animals 101 featured a visit from a hairless cat named Smeagle and a large black lab named Sampson. Club members presented a $300 check to Connie Graf, Director of the Frederick Co. Humane Society.
“We’ve done this once before, and we raised a few hundred dollars just like this one,” says freshman Emily Hartmark. Animals 101 meets once a month on its designated club day.
According to Mrs. Karen Burall, club adviser, Animals 101 raised the money by selling Yankee Candles. They support many local rescues such as the Rabies Clinic with Dr. Dan, Gentle Giant, Day’s End, and 4-H Therapeutic Riding program.
Graf said the money that was raised in Animals 101 is going to the Emergency Assistance Program, a program that helps those who cannot afford medical care for their pets.
The Frederick Humane Society is funded by donations, so Graf was pleased to see that there are young people reaching out to the animals in their community.
Graf said, “I think it’s great, the program you have. I hope everyone finds a role to help animals in general.
Many of the club members deal with animals on a regular basis at home, and what draws many members to join is the visiting animals. Sampson, a Great Dane/Black Lab mix, was gentle and huge. The hairless cat was an unusual sight, and looked strikingly similar to Smeagle in the Lord of the Rings movies.
