It’s best to Meet the Vamps with “Somebody to You”
January 8, 2015
The Vamps are a sensation in the U.K and the United States, with three Top 3 singles, over 80 million views on their YouTube/VEVO channel, and a Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award for “UK Favorite Breakthrough.” In 2014, the British band was nominated for a Radio Disney Music Award for “The Freshest-Best New Artist.” Their newest single, “Somebody to You” from their album Meet the Vamps is a great way to fall in love with the band.
The Vamps are a British teen pop band consisting of Brad Simpson (lead vocals and guitar), James McVey (lead guitar and vocals), Connor Ball (bass guitar and vocals) and Tristan Evans (drums and vocals). They first gained fame in late 2012 with cover songs uploaded to YouTube. They were signed to Mercury Records in November 2012 and then signed to Island Records in 2014.
Their style of music has a very upbeat tempo and isn’t over produced like much of new music today. They co-write all of their songs, most of which have a rockier power-pop feel. The Vamps have already toured with artists such as Selena Gomez, Austin Mahone, Taylor Swift and The Wanted. The music is enhanced by their to-die-for good looks.
Meet The Vamps includes voices of pop star Demi Lovato (“Somebody to You”) and another upcoming artist Shawn Mendes (“Oh Cecelia, You’re Breaking My Heart”).
The band and Lovato did their own promotion of the “Somebody to You” single by tweeting the iTunes link and posting the single’s cover on Instagram.
“Somebody To You” is a great song to introduce the new band and their style of music. This single is an upbeat, catchy song that talks about finding the girl and changing his ways. Relationships didn’t seem important until he met “the one.” All the money in the world doesn’t buy happiness; nothing matters unless you have that one special person in your life. The sentiment is cliche, but it resonates with everyone. Each voice and instrument is clear, without the typical “boy band” blend.
The “Somebody to You” music video is set on a beach during the summer of 2014 in Malibu. The boys rock out with their instruments, play volleyball and soccer, swim/ play around in a pool and see a group of girls that they start hanging out with. Demi Lovato’s part comes in as she sings on the hood of a car and later on the beach. Charlie Barcley, the director did an amazing job of connecting the lyrics of the song, to the music video. Usually music videos have nothing in common with the concept of the song, but not with this video, and I loved it!
A reason why I love the band is because their voices sound so real and raw. I think they can be famous for their talent not their looks. (Although, I’m not complaining.) The Vamps are often compared to another UK band, One Direction, but their sound is completely different. One Direction has great voices, but they don’t blend well. I don’t think Meet the Vamps is another One Direction (with only one direction).
