Adele: She’s back!

by Garrett Wiehler, Reporter

She’s back! It has been four years, nine months and 4 days since Adele released her hit album 21. 21 had a multitude of hits including “Rolling in the Deep”, “Rumor Has It”, “Set Fire to the Rain”, “Someone Like You” and my favorite: “Turning Tables”.

Adele has been to called the Amy Whinehouse of the Millennial  generation, but Adele is more than that.  Adele is, well, Adele. No matter how old you are, you can enjoy Adele, and she’s made us wait for a long time.

Was it worth the wait? Yes! “Hello” was released October 23 (10 hours ago),  and I got chills watching the video. Already a master of the ballad, this one will soar on the charts. All of her songs are long and tell a story but, they all sound different enough to be interesting. Many popular bands and artists such as Mumford and Sons have not been able to diversify and struggle to re-start with each new album.

Adele also remains true to her characteristic sound,  something that artists and bands such as Maroon 5 and Taylor Swift have failed to do. Adele also has soulfulness that other ballad singers of this generation like Florence and the Machine, and Lana Del Rey have not achieved.

“Hello” itself is a song that tells a story of two ex-lovers, a common theme in Adele’s work. The song had a similar emotional effect on me to “Someone Like You.” I only got choked up instead of having to dry my eyes from a stream of tears. Don’t be mistaken; getting choked up is a good sign. If a single from Adele can pull on your heartstrings, then her album 25, set to release on November 20th, will most definitely be an emotional journey that you’ll enjoy.

25 has high expectations and still might not meet them, but “Hello” was a strong first single.

Adele didn’t pull out a flashy music video; instead she had a black and white series of vignettes that could’ve been from anyone’s’ life making her, and the music, all the more relatable.

Adele’s look also has a lot to do with the difference between her and the rest of the pop music world. She isn’t conventionally attractive, and she doesn’t try to be, but she is human, earthly and has an aura of beauty about her.

Hopefully the rest of 25 will be just as good as “Hello,” and I would bet money that it will be. So get ready for November 20th because Adele is back.
