In a Lancer Media poll, 53% of those polled agree that “sleeping late” is the best reason for a snow day.
The second choice, “the beautiful scenery,” came in at 18%, with “snowboarding/sledding/skating” closely behind at 13%. Five percent of all polled said that they “hate snow days!”
“Other” responses included “making unexpected things out of snow” and “making money.” The student that responded with “making money” informed us that he had made $300 in the last big snow with only muscle and a snow shovel.
The most recent late opening in Frederick County Public Schools was Wednesday, January 29. Schools were delayed because of icy roads resulting from a dusting of overnight snow. The Atlantic published a map by region illustrating how many inches of snow it takes to close schools. The map shows that Maryland cancels school for 1-3 inches of snow in a 24 hour period or overnight. Much of the south, however, only needs any snowfall whatsoever or a prediction to close schools. The north ranges from 1-2 feet of snow before cancelling school.
