SGA donates $14,246.72 to leukemia research
May 6, 2014
On club day (4/30/14), the SGA presented Patricia Sturm, the School & Youth Coordinator for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Maryland, with a check for $14,246.72.
The funds were accumulated throughout the various fund raisers, but most especially by the Egg Nog Jog. Sturm was surprised by the fund raiser’s originality and creativity.
The money that was raised for the foundation will be put toward the research to find a cure for the disease.
According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society,
- In 2013, an estimated 310,046 people in the US are living with or in remission from leukemia.
- The overall five-year relative survival rate for leukemia has more than quadrupled since 1960, from 14 percent in whites from 1960 to 1963 (only data available) to 59.2 percent for all races from 2003 to 2009.
- Leukemia is the most common type of cancer in children and adolescents younger than 20 years, accounting for 26.7 percent of all types of cancer occurring among children and adolescents younger than 20 years.
The Egg Nog Jog is held in memory of Quentin Prescott Ingram, who passed away in 2004 due to acute myeloid leukemia.
He was in elementary school with many current students, who remember the memorial service that was held at Linganore High School. It has been estimated that at least 1,200 people were in attendance.
