Think of Maryland State Fair, and most people picture cows and chickens, carnival rides, and hot dog eating contests.  Fashion and the fair do not mix.

Or do they?  The home art of sewing is celebrated in a Fashion Revue.

At this year’s 2014 Maryland State Fair, junior Courtney Rein, sophomore Sydney Rossman and freshman Jordan Cencula participated in the Maryland State 4-H Fashion Revue on Sunday, August 31st.

In order to attend this event, participants must have earned a Champion ribbon on the garments that they sewed and modeled at the county level. Leading up to the state fashion show is an entire afternoon filled with judging, modeling practice and crafting. Twenty five girls modeled their hand-made garments, and several participants volunteered to be a narrators.

Courtney Rein welcomed everyone to the show with the opening ceremony.  Rein described her preparation.  “ I had to get my make up and accessories for my outfit. I also had to practice what I was going to say at the fashion show.”  This is Rein’s second year representing Howard County 4-H. She said that attending events like this has helped her to gain a strong sense of confidence.

“It is a great achievement to be able to come to State Fashion Revue. Fashion Revue builds self esteem and teaches youth valuable life skills,” said Chris Rein, mother of Courtney, in regards to the state event.

Jordan Cencula was selected to represent Montgomery County 4-H. Since Cencula is not a senior 4-H participant, she joined in all the day’s activities to learn the process so that when she becomes a senior in 4-H she will know what to expect. She is looking forward to participating as a senior in the future.

Sydney Rossman first experienced the fashion show as a junior participant.  This year she competed as a senior and won Reserve Champion ribbon for the “Separates” category, where she constructed a black and white floral high/low skirt with a red sleeveless shirt with flounce detail. Rossman is looking forward to the opportunity to compete again next year.
