Annual community show celebrates agricultural traditions
October 3, 2014
You have heard of the Great Frederick, Howard County Fair, The York Fair, but did you know that Linganore has a fair/show? This year will be the 41st year of this unique tradition. The entire community can enter baked goods, art, crafts, and more on October 5.
The show is open to visitors on October 6 and 7. The Linganore Community Show is fun for the whole family. There is a tractor pull for the younger children, contests, and an award that is given to the person who wins the most blue ribbons.
Mr. Tom Hawthorne and Mrs. Pat Beachy, along with a committee of FFA volunteers, parents and community members, puts on this show.
Mr. Hawthrone said, “I continue to help with the show because I enjoy working with the people, and I think many of the Linganore students get a lot out of it. I would like to see a greater increase in participation, but it still helps to educate people about agriculture.”
Senior Kira Zimmermen is the FFA President. “I frequently find is my responsibility to make sure things get done and everything is in order. I feel that becoming involved in FFA has improved my public speaking ability.”
“We enter in the community show as a way to support the community,” said junior Sabrina Moxely.
Participants and visitors connect through traditional agriculture, crafts, and foods.
“My best memory from the community show was our second grade field trip where we got to take hay wagon ride and participate in the games,” said Moxely.
Second grade students from feeder elementary schools visit the show on Tuesday, October 7th. Activities for them will include face painting, hay rides, a petting zoo and much more.

More about these ads.Community member Mrs. Ann Murphy has helped for more than 25 years. Murphy said, “I enjoy it. My daughter was the chairperson and I helped her out, and when she moved, I wanted to still help.”
Murphy remembers years with snow storms, electricity knocked out and heavy rain, but the show goes on.
Many people participated when they were children and now volunteer as adults.
Kira Zimmermen said, “I wanted to help out with the show because I was raised with it. I have participated in it every year (or as long as I can remember). It gave me the drive to complete at an early age, to do better and try harder with everything that I do.”
