Underhill joins social studies staff

There is fresh face in the Social Studies department and her name is Lauren Underhill. She is returning from a three-year sabbatical.

In 2010, Mrs. Underhill left her teaching position at Brunswick Middle School to move to Cardiff, Wales, with her Welsh husband and to raise her children.

“We traveled throughout Great Britain as well and had our first child during that time.  Fast forward a few months, and a second child later and I was getting the itch to come back to work for FCPS.  Luckily, Mr. Kehne also needed a teacher to start in January….so it was fate I guess, Underhill said.

“Being around adults and older students has been wonderful for me and my family.  No more baby brain!  No really, the staff and students at LHS have been the best people I have ever worked with so far.  I really mean it.”

She also likes modern European and American history most of all because of her experiences traveling throughout Europe as a child. She also likes topics such as Robber Barons and the Great Depression.

She likes teaching because, “Imparting my knowledge is very rewarding and making students think about the world is exciting.” She says that there are never enough hours in the school day to get done all that she needs to, and that is the most frustrating.

Junior, Dillon Mitcham said, “She seems very nice, and she has a lot to teach us about American history.” He also said Mrs. Underhill makes learning fun because “she sometimes shows us videos that are very relevant to our upcoming units.”

She “always has a positive mood,” said Mitcham.

Social Studies Department Chair, Mr. Burch said, “She fits right in with the rest of the department where she has wonderful rapport with students, is well-organized and she absolutely loves teaching.”
