Matt displays his soccer talent in a game

This is the sixth story in Lancer Media’s Summer Series: Most Likely To… These feature stories highlight students who are becoming role models of Lancer Spirit.

In the Linganore Class of 2016, Matt Watson is the guy in the class who seems to know all the answers. You might know him as captain of the JV soccer team. You probably saw some posters with his name on them when he was running for SGA 2nd Vice President (which he won), but even if you don’t know who he is now — you will soon.

“I’m kind of a dork,” said Watson.

He might see himself as a dork, but Watson is involved with an impressive number of activities. In addition to his already time-consuming SGA and soccer involvement, Watson is also first trumpet in marching band.

In his time outside of Linganore’s campus, Watson coaches MAYAA (Mount Airy Youth Athletic Association) U10 girls soccer.

“Coaching really teaches me leadership and responsibility,” he said.

Watson recognizes the influence that Linganore will have on his life in the future. “Linganore has taught me how to pay attention,” said Watson. “Also, getting stuff done, deadlines, and managing my time.”

Sophomore Ryan Stark, who has known Watson since they both attended Twin Ridge Elementary, said, “He is extremely intelligent. He has great drive to do great things.”

He attributes much of his motivation to his relationship with God. He is an active participant in Young Life.  “My faith is in everything that I do,” said Watson. “God is my inspiration.”

On a more earthly level, he sees his parents as his mentors. “My dad teaches me stuff all the time. My parents give me everything I need to be successful.”

Watson already has goals for his junior year; he wants to start on varsity soccer, continue to be first trumpet in the marching band, and to grow as a leader. In addition, he will be moving from SGA 2nd Vice President to 1st VP.

Band director Mr. Kevin Lloyd described Watson as “Very responsible, enthusiastic, reliable, and a strong musician.”

“He displays leadership beyond his years. He leads by example,” said Lloyd. “He does the right thing so often.”

Over the summer, Watson plans to work out to prepare him for varsity soccer and practice his trumpet in order to defend his first trumpet spot.

Watson says he is looking to continue his education at some tech schools out west, perhaps Cal Tech. But for now, “I’m just working hard in my classes and preparing for the SATs,” said Watson.

Watson recognizes that he is the beginning of a Lancer legacy. “I have two Watsons coming to Linganore after me, so I don’t want to just be remembered as their brother. I want to be remembered as a leader and a positive influence on everyone,” he said.

“Hard work pays off, but always make time to relax,” said Watson.
