On Friday, February 21, Tate McRae released her newest album “So Close To What.¨
To-date, almost every review written about the album has been positive. McRae announced in November 2024 that she would be going on tour in 2025, starting March 18 and ending on November 8.
The last time McRae released an album was in December 2023 which was called “Think Later”. This album was 38 minutes and 16 seconds long. This album, “So Close to What” is 42 minutes long.
One of the songs called “I know love” (featuring The Kid LAROI) shares the experience of being in a relationship and feeling supported. In this song, they sing about how much they appreciate each other.
McRae and The Kid LAROI were seen together in early 2024 and have stayed together ever since.
McRae has a way with her alternative pop music; she has common themes of heartbreak, comparison, and uplifting music of all sorts.
There are two songs that were announced before the album was officially released. Both of which dropped hints on the release of this album with an acronym. McRae teased the name of this album in two of the songs that are now a part of “So Close To What.”
The first song on the album is called “It’s ok I’m ok” where she included the acronym “SC2W” on the license plate of the black Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 while McRae and her backup dancers perform.
The next song is called “2 hands” and the acronym is also featured in this music video. This time it takes place on an orange McLaren 750S.
This acronym stands for “So Close to What” which became the name of her album. These subtle hints leave fans going crazy with many questions about what they mean. McRae knows what she is doing with the music industry since she has been involved since 2012.
Each song on this album makes you want to keep listening. Some of the songs have more of a laid back vibe including the songs “Like I do,” “Nostalgia,” and “Greenlight” all have moderate melodies.
The tracklist consists of 15 amazingly written songs that will simply make you feel the music. For McRae only having three studio albums, she is very talented and is a high quality song writer.
“Signs” is one of the best songs on that album; this song addresses “unspoken expectations” as the website for lyrics and musical knowledge, Genius Lyrics says. This can speak to a lot of young relationships because the feeling of a song verbalizing the words you cannot say is unmatched.
Another outstanding song on this album is “Greenlight.” In an interview Tate explained
“Sometimes when you’re getting into new relationships or new situations, and every signal or sign is telling you that it’s okay to move forward, it still can feel like one of the most impossible tasks,”McRae said.
Tate uses her platform to connect with her listeners and that is exactly what this album does. “So Close to What” is just an exceptional and strategic way to connect to people who may be going through a heartbreak, or even want to switch it up and listen to upbeat cheerful songs to dance around to.
There are many dances made to McRae’s music that she performs during her shows, so the impatient wait for the choreography to this album is mighty.
“It’s ok I’m ok” was released as a single, but became a part of the album and quickly became included in Tate McRae’s Hot 100 debut which is a website declaring all of the artists hits that have debuted as number one on the webpage “Hot 100”.
Overall, this album has been a great listen. Tate McRae is an artist that deserves all of the recognition she gets. Listening to the album was a pleasant experience for each individual song.
