On March 17, Mr. Darren Hornbeck and his students hosted a Ukraine teach-in during lunch for students interested in learning about what is happening in Ukraine. At one table students were selling candy bars while at the next table students presented information regarding events happening in Ukraine.

The candy bars sold out by the third lunch on Thursday, the first day of the two day event, raising more than $400 toward UNICEF. Twice as many candy bars were sold on Friday. In total, over $600 was raised. Each bar was sold for $2 at all lunch shifts; although, many people donated more money.

The presentation included information on previous elections, events leading up to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, along with insight on NATO. Each class member was involved in some way: some made posters, others presented the information, while some sold the candy.

Senior Taylor Grepes-Carroll volunteered to teach. “It’s important to understand what is happening in the world outside our scope of knowledge,” she said.

Although few students took advantage of the teach-in, it was a well organized event.

All the money made went towards the United Nations Children’s Fund, (UNICEF) an organization to protect the lives of young people at risk. Since the beginning  of the conflict in Ukraine, UNICEF works to fulfill the core commitments for children in humanitarian action.
