Senior Countdown 2019: Varsity Baseball is in the home stretch with 20 days left

Linganore Varsity baseball poses for a post-game picture as they defeated the defending 3A state champion Thomas Johnson 4-3. To celebrate their 20 days left, they played at Harry Grove Stadium, home of the Class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, the Frederick Keys.

Eight seniors will graduate from the squad: Dylan Miller, Matthew Gelhard, Tyler Perry, Samuel Marth, Cruz Cortez, Cole Lee, Jacob Ference, and Jake Santis.

The baseball team sits at the top of their conference with a 8-1 record with a 9-4 record overall, highlight games being the walk-off hit against second place North Hagerstown to win in the 7th, beating CMC rival Urbana 10-3, and mercy-ruling Thomas Johnson 10-0 for their first win of the season.

Dylan Miller said, “My favorite memories of high school baseball consist of match ups between former teammates that go to rival schools, and getting to create a bond with the ball players that I played beside at my own high school.”.

Miller will continue his education at the University of Maryland to study in business finance.

Tyler Perry, Jacob Ference, and Cole Lee are all four year varsity players. All being a part of two 3A West Sectional Finals and a Regional Finals appearance, all are looking for their final season to end with a trophy. This team carries a different feeling than those teams.

“We have a close group of guys on the team, no outside noise affects us. We have fun, get along, and are ready to work hard day in and day out,” said Jacob Ference.

Ference will continue playing at Salisbury University while studying in business finance.

Lee will continue his athletic career at Hagerstown Community College , while majoring in physical therapy.

Perry will continue his playing career at Frederick Community College and will study business management.

Other seniors include:

Gelhard plans to attend a a four year college to study communications and play baseball.

Marth will also continue his academic career at Frederick Community College. He plans to work at the local fire department.

Cortez will continue his baseball and academic career at Minnesota West Community & Technical College while studying liberal arts.

Santis will continue his academic career at Grove City College, studying biblical and religious studies, and playing football.
