On November 20, the varsity and junior varsity boys basketball teams scrimmaged against each other to get ready for the season. Varsity won 35-21, but the JV team gave them serious competition. Sophomores Mason Porter and Chase Savage are rising to be team leaders. Both teams were missing key players who are still on the football team.
Last year the varsity boys had an outstanding season with a record of 21-5 and made it as far as the county regionals, but fell short to Thomas Johnson 55-48.
This year the team is hoping to have make it deeper into post-season play.
Senior Kendall Johnson has high expectations for the team this season. “I expect us to be the team to beat this year in Frederick County. We are very fortunate to have the majority of last season’s team return for this year so the chemistry is already there. A state title is the team’s main goal this season. I believe we would be doing ourselves a disservice to be satisfied by anything else,” said Johnson. The last appearance in state competition was four years ago when when Thomas Lang, Nicholas Lang, Keegan Lane and Jack Staub were leading the team.
“The entire team needs to remain locked in throughout the whole season. I think it’s easy to get comfortable once things get rolling, but each day we have to come into practice looking to be better than the previous day, and go into each game looking to slaughter whatever team we are facing,” says Johnson.
“I think not becoming complacent will be our biggest thing this year. We all expect a lot of success this season and that cant get to our heads. As long as we humble ourselves as a team, I don’t see much of anything becoming a real challenge for us.” Johnson added.
The basketball season starts on December 10 against Oakdale at Oakdale–tip-off at 7.
