On May 6, 2019, Mr. Patrick Greene’s Principals of Engineering class observed a presentation from the robotics team.
Frederick County’s Team 686 consists of Brynn Kerney, John Grimes, Peter Kurupus, and J.D. Murtagh, as well as students from Walkersville and Oakdale. In 1989, when Team 686 was founded, it was named Bovine Intervention due to the agricultural areas surrounding the school.
Team 686 funds interests in technology and helps grow futures in robotics and engineering.
Team 686 moved to Walkersville in 2009. It serves the Linganore, Walkersville, and Oakdale students, but anyone in Frederick County is welcome to join.
Team 686 is structured with a hierarchy; it has a president, a vice president, a secretary, a treasurer and other positions.
There are three segments to the team’s season. Off season, which runs from April through December; Build season which runs from January through February; and Competition season which runs from February through March.
During off season, Team 686 runs fundraisers and community events, like assisting at the Walkersville Carnival, doing presentations at HomeWood Retirement and counseling summer camps.
Team 686 meets twice a week to discuss their recent achievements, make plans and work on goals.
In 2018 alone, Team 686 took home the titles of District Champion, second place in The Battle Of Baltimore, first place in BunnyBots and the 2019 Deepspace Excellence in engineering.
The 2019 competition theme was called Deepspace, and 2020’s theme will be Infinite Recharge.
In 2020, Team 686 and Maryland will be partnering with Disney and Lucas Films.
There are currently 15-20 active members in Team 686. If you would like to be on the robotics team, become a social media manager, or even create T-shirts, speak to Mr. Green or a team member for an application.
