Today we honor three African American athletes, all of whom had enormous roles in breaking color barriers:  Doug Williams, Jackie Robinson, and Jesse Owens.

Doug Williams is known for his remarkable performance with the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXII. He was the first African-American starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl. Next we honor Jackie Robinson.  In 1947 he became the first black athlete to break the color barrier and play Major League Baseball in the 20th century when he took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers. After his baseball career, he became a vocal civil rights activist.

Lastly, we recognize Jesse Owens who was an African American track and field star.  He won four gold medals and broke two world records at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Owens was the most successful athlete in the 1936 summer Olympic Games. We respect the victories that these men earned and the hardships that these men overcame as we honor all that they did to help further equality for black Americans.

The Lancer Lecture Series is designed to provide students the opportunity to hear from and speak with experts in their field and persons with firsthand accounts of historical events during PREP. This spring we have obtained four speakers. As a part of the Lancer Lecture series will be showing the movie Selma which is going to be played in the auditorium during prep on February 12th through the 14th. Tickets are still on sale today during lunch.

Our mock trial team had a trial Tuesday night against Tuscarora. The plaintiff team won by 10 points and the team is now 4 and 0. There are 2 regular season trials left. One on the 21st against Frederick and on the 27th against Middletown. Keep it up team!

The National Art Honor Society is sponsoring a paint night on Tuesday, February 13th from 6:30 to 8:30 in rm A211. See Ms Geisser outside A211 for more information.

With their match last night, the wrestling team has qualified for regionals for the first time in 22 years! Great job team and good luck in your next match.

Linganore Basketball teams are back on the court tonight! They will be facing off against Tuscarora with the boys teams playing away and the girls teams playing at home. JV games start at 5:30 and Varsity games start at 7. It is senior night for the girls varsity team so be sure to come out before the game to support the team.
