Today we honor the women whose contributions to NASA are highlighted in the movie, Hidden Figures and the first African American female astronaut. Katherine Goble was a mathematician who contributed to our air and space programs with the early application of computers at NASA. Mary Jackson was a mathematician and aerospace engineer who became NASA’s first black female engineer.
Dorothy Vaughan was a mathematician and human computer who became the first African-American woman to supervise a staff of white women at NASA. Dr. Mae C. Jemison was a medical doctor, and the first African-American female astronaut. In 1992, she flew into space aboard the Endeavour, becoming the first African-American woman in space. What amazing women! We respect their impact on our space program.
As a part of the Lancer Lecture series, Amelia Draper, who is a meteorologist with NBC News 4, is coming to Linganore. Sign-ups will be in the cafeteria up until February 16th.

Next week is the start of the National F-F-A spirit week. Each day will have a different theme. If you stop by Ms. Beachy’s room in B-1-2-4 while dressed up in the day’s theme, you can be entered for a chance to win Lancer F-F-A wear. Tuesday is “Made in the USA” Day, along with the Jersey Mike’s fundraiser in Mount Airy. Present a copy of the flier to the cashier in order to have the proceeds go towards the Linganore F-F-A.
