Seven SGA students along with other peers selected in the county traveled up to Ocean City, Maryland to attend the 2018 Maryland Association of Student Councils (MASC) Student Leadership Convention. It is a three-day annual event at the Clarion Fontainebleau Resort. There were only seven spots were for Linganore on this trip based on the size of each school. Katie Brengel, Brandon Neuman, Brady Moore, Charlotte Moore, Megan Mong-Kerwin, Dominic Barbagallo, and Josh Watson.

The MASC is a student government for the state of Maryland. Linganore’s SGA is involved in its decisions and is a local branch of this government.

Members from every county in Maryland attended this event to participate in workshops to improve their leadership skills, meet new people with the same interest in leadership, and elect the 2018-2019 officers of the MASC.

The three workshops included activities that built leadership skills by working with others, a debate, and speakers that spoke about their experiences. Robert Pruitt one of the keynote speakers made the audience express their feelings while expressing some of his own thoughts into the minds of the crowd.

“The activities gave us the opportunity to work with new people and to utilize our leadership skills,” said sophomore Katie Brengel.  Brengel described how each student had to attend a different workshop, so it made the students speak up.  Katie’s new elected role in the SGA is Parliamentarian.

Members had four general assembles over the three days to discuss legislative actions in Maryland. Some of the topics included were mental health problem awareness and school safety policies.

Josh Watson said, “I had an excellent time. I was inspired by the young leaders representing Frederick County.”
