Movie Review: Bohemian Rhapsody will rock your understanding of Freddie Mercury
November 27, 2018
The song “Bohemian Rhapsody” was released in 1975. Who hears the first three thumping notes and doesn’t immediately know the next notes? This is rock band Queen‘s most famous and iconic anthem.
November 2 the movie Bohemian Rhapsody was released, and it made over 100 million dollars opening weekend. The media has not stopped talking about it. This is a don’t miss film for Queen fans–and a hit even for those who know nothing about the band.
This movie shows the audience Freddie Mercury’s tragic story. Bohemian Rhapsody captures all the problems Mercury was faced with, including his is stressful life on tour, his problem with drugs and, most of all, his sexuality. These problems Freddie was having lead to strong tension with his family, his wife and his band mates.
I love Queen, so I was expecting to like the movie, but I was surprised because I learned a lot about Freddie Mercury that I never knew before.
This movie had amazing cinematography. One of the most memorable scenes in the movie was the scene at the Live Aid Concert. It was a charity concert for people in need that were living in Africa. This concert held 170,000 people, and 1.5 billion people were watching on television. The movie had a amazing scene where the band was performing at the concert, and it looked incredibly realistic.
The actors in this movie did a excellent job, and they looked just like the real people they were portraying.
Rami Malek played Freddie Mercury, and he looked and sounded just like him. Malek wore fake teeth to represent Mercury’s big teeth and he wore very exotic clothing just like Mercury did. Malek took vocal lessons and taught himself to dance and move like Mercury.
The guitarist, Brian May was played by Gwilym Lee. Lee did a outstanding job capturing Brian May’s strong accent and his long curly black hair. There were a lot of scenes in the movie where the band was arguing. May was always very mature when he argued and kept a very professional attitude. May always seemed like the parent of the band. Lee acted like the babysitter of the band. Lee did a great job doing this.
Drummer Roger Taylor was played by actor Ben Hardy. Hardy did a excellent job of capturing his appearance . Taylor was known for his short temper and he argued with the band the most. Later in the movie there was a lot of tension between Mercury and Taylor. It showed us Taylor’s angry and short tempered side. Hardy captured this perfectly.
Queen’s bassist John Deacon was played by Joseph Mazzelo. Deacon was more quiet and kept to himself. Mazzelo nailed role. For example in a scene where the band was arguing, Deacon kept to himself and was quietly playing his bass guitar in the back.
This movie also captures how Freddie Mercury joined Brian May and Roger Taylor and made Queen. And it shows how Queen became famous. It shows some of the famous recording sessions they had and it also shows them progressing and becoming more well known.
The soundtrack for Bohemian Rhapsody was great. They used many famous original Queen songs such as, “Somebody to love,” “Another One Bites The Dust,” “We Are The Champions,” and, of course, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” And the movie showed how a lot of their most well known songs were written.
Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the very best movies I have ever watched and I can’t think of anything that could have been done better. This movie is amazing and I strongly recommend anyone to go see it.
