Seniors, get your computers ready for scholarships.
On February 16, The Community Foundation of Frederick County representative, Pilar Olivo, came to Linganore to talk to seniors about the local scholarship application process.
Last year, the foundation gave out $1.07 million worth of scholarships. They had 406 total scholarships and 311 students received them.
This year the Community Foundation has $900 thousand worth of scholarship money for Frederick County residents, with a minimum $1,000 scholarship that can be used for tuition, room and board and fees for part-time or full-time students.
The best part of the scholarship process is that there is one application for over 250 or more scholarships.
Sixty percent of the scholarship money will be awarded based on financial need.
The application opens March 1, 2017 and students must submit their final applications no later than March 31 at 11:59 pm.
Senior Quinn Waxter said, “I am excited that we can use our Common App essays, and 30% of the people who apply get the scholarships.”
Scholarship recipients will be notified via email in early June 2017.
Here’s what you should gather before you start the application process:
- Academic transcript, student aid report (FAFSA), your parent’s 2015 Maryland Tax Return.
- Need a couple PDF documents- transcript, student aid report, first page of the 2015 Maryland Tax Return.
- Personal essay on one of the Common App prompt,s or you can use your own prompt.
- Make sure you have someone look over your application.
Olivo visited all of the local high schools. Linganore’s session was the last one.
