To celebrate February, this is the second story in a series about LHS Alumni who were high school sweethearts.

‘Together forever’ is an almost impossible commitment to make to someone, especially when you begin as high school students. Approximately two percent of all marriages are to  high school sweethearts. LHS Alumni of all ages are among that two percent. On the Linganore High School Alumni Association page on Facebook, dozens of alumni have shared photos celebrating marriage and love.

Gary and Vicki

Friends with Gary’s Pocock’s sister Patricia, Vicki Farver spent ample time around the Pocock family.

As they bonded while working on their families’ farms, a relationship blossomed in 1966 when they shared their first kiss at the Mount Airy Fireman’s’ Carnival (which many teens still attend today) on the ferris wheel.

After dating for two years, Gary left for boot camp during Vicki’s senior year at Linganore. In 1969, months after Vicki’s graduation, Vicki received a collect call from Gary who was stationed in North Carolina. Gary said, “Don’t talk, I don’t have much time– going to RI. If I pass this school, I get a week’s liberty; LETS GET MARRIED.”

Vicki recalls she “was blown away” but, of course, she said “yes.” She took what was supposed to be her senior prom dress, reconstructed it into a wedding gown, and the two were wed September 1, 1969– Labor Day.

After 45 years together, Vicki says, “The years at and after Linganore High School have seen a lot of changes. Some were good and some maybe not so good.  However, we have stuck together and plan to stay that way as long as possible as both friends and lovers.  Not all has been easy, but I have loved every minute of it. I really don’t think I would change much. Always remember good relationships are based on friendship.”
