Change of command: JROTC hosts last awards ceremony and appoints new staff
May 20, 2015
“Next year, Linganore will have a program leaving that has been a part of the school for many years,” said Mr. Dave Kehne in his opening remarks.
On May 19th, the JROTC program hosted what was its last awards ceremony at Linganore. Due to low enrollment at LHS and a need for the program in a more central county location, JROTC will be relocating to Governor Thomas Johnson High School. The awards ceremony served as a bittersweet farewell for graduating seniors, and participating cadets alike.
Awards were given to numerous cadets for academic achievement, leadership skills, and overall character. Organizations such as the VFW and the American Legion were present at the ceremony.
Senior Bobby Milburn closed the awards ceremony with his farewell speech. “For four years, we’ve kept our honor. For four years, we’ve kept our commitment. For four years, we’ve kept our courage. These are the values that I encourage,” said Bobby Milburn. The values that he is referring to is also the Navy core values that cadets are taught
The ceremony ended with officer change of command. Milburn’s successor to unit commanding officer is junior Brian Traube. This year, the commanding officer did not give his successor a Linganore guide-on, military flag designed for unit designation. Milburn handed Traube the guide-on for Patriot JROTC.
