The 42nd annual Linganore-New Market Community Show started October 4th, and ended October 6th. The Community Show has over 30 divisions of entries such as baked goods, needlework, arts and crafts, and many other categories. They have divisions for adults and youth.
Anyone in the community can enter. When the judges determine the winners of each division, sometimes the entry is auctioned off, but in other cases entries win ribbons and small premiums.
In the cake division, for example, the winning cakes are auctioned off. According to Mr. Jeremy Brown, who attended the auction, a carrot cake sold for $600.
This year, Mrs. Sharon Smith, the assistant principal’s secretary, entered a paper wreath into the arts and crafts division, five potatoes, and a gourd display in the garden division. She won first place for her paper wreath and her five potatoes. Mrs. Smith also won grand champion for her gourd display.
Linganore FFA alumni sponsor the community show as well as the Maryland Agricultural Fair Board, the Linganore and New Market Granges, and the 4-H Clubs in the area. Every year they sponsor this event to unite the communities and districts surrounding Linganore High School and showcase their talents and agricultural produce.
Linganore students in art and horticulture classes submit different arrangements and projects. On Tuesday, children from local schools visited the show. Students brought in horses, cows, a goat, and many other animals for the children to see and learn about.
