On Friday, May 22, the Harry Potter Alliance club held their first Quidditch Match. The match was organized by the president of the club, junior Corinne DeFrancisci and club adviser Marsha Thompson.
Many students and teachers came to support the event, including principal David Kehne and physical education teacher Barbara Ferguson. Based on the enthusiasm of the after school event, Kehne suggested to Ferguson that she could include Quidditch as a sport in her class.
“I was expecting a lot of Harry Potter fans to be there, but there were a lot of athletic kids there and some of the lacrosse players, too. It was a good turnout,” said freshman Josh Watson, who participated as one of the two snitches.
Eight teams participated in the event. Toon Squad came in first place; Neville Up came in a close second; and American Snapers came in third place.
“We all got matching uniforms, headbands, eye black, and superhero socks. We also drew up where we wanted to play on the field and assigned positions,” said junior Tony Komara, member of the Toon Squad team.
“It was fun to go out and play,” said junior Noah Garabedian, also a member of the Toon Squad team. “Even if you aren’t super athletic you can still do pretty well. It is fun to have competition and just be out there.”
Harry Potter Alliance Club leaders juniors Marissa Maze and Corinne DeFrancisci raised $120 from the Quidditch Tournament. All of the money they earned was donated to the Frederick County Animal Shelter.
