Newcomb no newcomer
September 23, 2014
This is the fifth profile in Lancer Media’s Back to School Series: New Teachers.
Mrs. MaryEllen Newcomb is in her 27th year of teaching. In her past years she’s been at Thurmont Middle, Linganore High (in the old building), and Catoctin High School.
Newcomb says she looked forward to coming back to Linganore because she knows some of staff and how this school works. It’s a “safe” move.
Newcomb has a son, a daughter, and two grandchildren. In her free time, she enjoys baking, gardening, and creating things from “piles of junk.”
If she was in school now, Newcomb’s thinks that she’d be apart of the drama crowd because of her interest in drama, theater, and poetry.
Films that describe Newcomb’s personality include the screwball comedy, The Big Lebowski along with the crime, dramatic film, Fargo.
“I’m drawn to the dark sarcasm shown in those types of films,” says Newcomb.
Looking forward to this new year, Newcomb is excited to meet the staff and students. She also hopes to learn more about the latest technologies as well as the BYOD program because she didn’t have that at Catoctin.
Mrs. Newcomb has seen many changes in eduction since she was in High School. “I was in high school in the 70’s. We had pinball machines,” said Newcomb.
