Color Outside the Lines: Camellia Codd’s Cherry Blossom Tree

Senior Camellia Codd is enjoying her last semester by creating unique pieces in her jewelry class, taught by Georgia Geisser. Codd has created a cherry blossom tree using only wire. The project was introduced in her Jewelry and Small Sculpture class earlier this semester, and she knew exactly what she wanted to make.

“My favorite tree is a cherry blossom so that’s what I chose. I wanted to include color so I added red flowers,” said Codd.

The love for jewelry making is not new for Codd, as she has always made jewelry. “I used to make cheap beaded jewelry, and I thought it was fun,” said Codd.

Just like making jewelry, creativity and the love for art has always been a prominent part of her life. Codd has taken advantage of the art classes that are offered, and have used these classes to better her skills. Not only in traditional art such as painting, but in ceramics as well.

“I have taken Art 1,2,3 and Ceramics 1 and 2. I am currently taking Jewelry and Small Sculpture. I like making art and using different mediums and methods.”

Making the tree was not as easy as it looks. Codd explains that she had to use three various types of gauged wire and two different colors. The wire is not easily bent, so students are taught to use pliers, and other various tools to assist in the process. The wires have to be continuously spiraled, as well as overlapped to create the texture of tree trunks, and branches.

Even though the process was not the easiest, Codd assures that it is worth it. “I like the class a lot, I like making jewelry that I can take home, and wear.”

Codd is very excited to continue to create various types of jewelry such as earrings, rings, and much much more.

Her tree stands out among the rest because of how beautifully crafted it is. The red and silver wire compliment each other well.
