Class of 2016: Band celebrates 30 days until “rest”
Read more about the award-winning band and color guard.
Though they aren’t your classic helmet-needing, jersey-wearing, goal-scoring, field-storming jocks, the members of the marching band and color guard are athletes nonetheless.
The band members compete against other top bands, perform flawlessly in front of crowds, provide entertainment to many, and put in countless hours of practice, sweat (some of those instruments are heavy), and passion.
Along with the band, color guard also devotes practice to dance fluidly with the band and compete as its own team.

“Performing was my favorite part of marching band. I don’t know if I’ll ever get to perform again after high school, and that was 100% my favorite part of guard,” said Alida Hartwell, who will be attending UMBC for biological sciences.
“My favorite part of marching band was Disney World- spending time with my friends, Rockin Rollercoaster, and my promposal,” said trumpet player and section leader Matt Watson, who will be attending UMD to study mathematics.
Many of the band and color guard seniors were able to make some of their final band memories in Disney World during Spring Break this year.
