The National Honor Society for Dance Arts searches for honor students of junior and senior high school age to be nominated for the NDEO Artistic Merit, Leadership and Academic Achievement Award, the most prestigious student dance award in the nation. Junior Madelyn Beckman has been selected for an honorable mention by the Maryland Dance Education Association, an accomplishment that requires much skill and leadership.

Qualifications include a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, a solo video with artistic components, an essay, and membership in the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA), all of which are standards Beckman exceeded. She is on the class of 2023 council as Treasurer for SGA and is on her 14th year of dance. As an active member in both her dance and school community, she more than deserves this award, along with being one of three dance students in Maryland to be mentioned.

She dances for Savage dance Company, a multi-faceted performing arts center and home of Mid-Maryland’s National and Regional Award Winning competitive dance teams. Along with this, Beckman participates on the Linganore Poms team, typically dancing front row to showcase her talent.

Beckman said, “I’m hoping to further my career in college. My dance team allows me many opportunities to be scouted and considered for scholarships.”

Initially Beckman entered the competition hoping to receive a scholarship and was surprised to receive such important recognition. The national winner, finalists, and honorable mention recipients receive a certificate for their accomplishments.
