Poms team waits for results at their first competition.

On February 15th, the Poms competed at their first competition of the year. It was held at Archbishop Spalding High School through MAPDA, Mid Atlantic Poms and Dance Association. All the girls were pumped for this competition. The team placed second overall.

They competed with three different types of dances: Jazz, Short Poms, and Lyrical. The pom dance was an 80’s mix choreographed by Captain Lizzie Hall, the Lyrical dance was choreographed by senior Maddy Spisso, and the Jazz dance was choreographed by senior Avé James. They all did very well in each of the dances they performed.

“I feel like our team did very well. We were up against very good teams, but our team did the best to our abilities and really came through,” said sophomore Maria Applegate.

The high schools that they competed against were Woodson, Gwynn Park, Kent Island, and Glenelg. These schools were good competition for the girls.

“I’m always nervous, but I’m proud of them. It was probably the best first competition we’ve ever had,” said Coach Richardson.

The class of 2020 seniors who performed in the competition were Avé James, Maddy Spisso, Lizzie Hall, and Katie Johnson. This being their last year, the first competition was very exciting for them. Surely, all the other girls on the team will miss the seniors’ good leadership and hard work.

Freshman Ashlyn Martin said, “I love my pommies because they bring a good vibe, and I love dancing with all of them.”
