“Tale as old as time.”

On February 15, the cast and crew of Beauty and the Beast worked on building the set and their techniques for their big performance.

First the crew discussed safety and stage performance. History and Drama Teacher, Angela Smithhisler asked her students “Have you ever lifted up your head and bumped it…… well today we will be practicing how not to do that.”

Ready to get to work, the tech students rose to the occasion all exclaiming in unison “BREAK!!”

Kate Stadter got right to work and started building a component that’s made for the staircase set.  She took a PVC pipe with soda bottles on each end and added part of a smaller bottle in the middle to give it a curvy shape.  This will be the middle section of the main staircase in the show.  After she finishes building it, the crew will put pantyhose over the piece and spray paint it silver.

The crew started constructing the set around two weeks ago, and they are a little bit behind due to all the snow days.  “The big Mac Daddy piece in the show is the castle which we are not constructing yet…..we’ll start constructing it [the castle]  the first week of March” said Smithhisler.  The castle will have a west wing which is where the rose will be placed and a major grand staircase along with an east wing.

Smithhisler explained how there really isn’t anyone in charge of the set making “We call it a creative team. Me, my assistant directer [Mr. Dan Lake], my stage manager [Hanna Dufresne], and my student directors [Beau Cameron and Maggie Clugston] all came up with ideas for set pieces and during actual tech time. My stage manager leads everyone working on the set.”

Come out to see the show on opening night, Thursday April 11!
