On November 23, student leaders from all around the state traveled to Perry Hall High School for the Maryland Association of Student Councils Fall Leadership Conference. The theme for this conference, which included both middle and high school levels, was “Lights, Camera, Leadership.”

Participants went to three different workshops throughout the day, focused on advocacy, communication skills, elections, goal setting, leadership styles, marketing, mental health/self-care, public speaking, debating, self-awareness and identity, and entrepreneurship.

At the end of the day, students listened to panel speakers who were or are involved with MASC. Juwan Blocker, a panelist, spoke about how he lost the  Prince George’s County Board of Education election. He told students that even if you fail there is always another opportunity. You need to create space for yourself.

Juwan Blocker said, “If you don’t have a seat at the table, make one.”

“It was nice to meet a lot of new people from a bunch of different schools. I also learned different tools on ways to be a better student leader!” said Lindsey Green, Class of 2021.

Conference attendees included Matthew Coffey, Daniel Etherton, Lindsey Green, and Ashley Nash.  Mr. Jeremy Brown is Regional SGA Advisor, so he was in charge of the entire county participation, approximately 45 students.
