On September 18, the first meeting was held in the Media Center to begin the planning for Safe & Sane 2019. Safe & Sane is “a drug and alcohol-free, all-night celebration for graduating seniors sponsored by the PTSA.” This night-long graduation party is held annually at Mount St. Mary’s University the night of graduation–for the Class of 2019, this will be on May 29, 2019.
Chris Safsten, one of the Co-Chairs for Safe & Sane, said that 85% of seniors attended Safe & Sane in 2018, but that he hopes that the attendance rate will reach 100% in the future.
Safsten listed some of the activities offered at Safe & Sane: “swimming, basketball tournaments, volleyball tournaments, corn hole tournaments, mechanical bull, laser tag, inflatables, casino room, karaoke, money machine, jazzercise, caricatures drawn for each student, video game room, ping pong toss, prize table and food all night long!” Seniors can pick prizes with the tickets they win just for participating in any of the activities.
Safsten says that jazzercise in particular is “a big hit each year with nearly half of the seniors participating at the 1 a.m. event.”
Students also have the chance to win one of the ten large prizes, including a car donated annually by Century Ford of Mount Airy.
In 2019, Safe & Sane will take place all night Wednesday, May 29. The party will commence at 9:15 pm, and seniors will be brought back to the school on buses at 6:30 am the next day.
To support Safe & Sane 2019, be sure to participate in one of the many fundraiser events, including a bingo and raffle night, as well as Drive One 4 UR School.
Parents can attend meetings to help with the planning and volunteer to take part in the actual event. “It’s not only fun for the students, but the parents have a great time as well. We ask parents to pay it forward and participate while their students are undergrads to help make graduation for the current seniors a great event. We hope to see everyone there,” said Safsten.
