On December 11, the swimming and diving team, coached by Joseph Hawkins, competed against Urbana at Middletown for their first meet. The final score was the girls with 107- 69. The boys’ team put up a fight but came up short.

The girls last year saw little success as a team, even though individuals won many events. The win was even more notable because Linganore has only 16 swimmers, which Urbana has 31.

In the girls 200 yard medley relay Linganore’s teams took first and second. The first place winners were Rachel McCoy, Lyra Garrett, Emily Lotito, and Taylor Koch.

Jessica Buntman also won first place, the only diver for both teams, with a score of 226.85. She helped Linganore secure the win.

Rachel McCoy broke the Linganore 100 butterfly record with a time of  59.52, and Lyra Garrett broke 100 backstroke record with 103.66.

“I love being able to finally be a part of Linganore in another way and to be able to win against Urbana. It was amazing since they have twice as many girls on their team,” said McCoy, Class of 2021.

The highest point scorers on the team were Megan Brobst and Rachel McCoy, each earning 12 points. Emily Lotito and Lyra Garrett earned 10. Katie Roach earned 9 points with a first in 500 freestyle.

“I love swim team because everyone on the team is really supportive of each other. We are constantly cheering for whoever is swimming. I am super excited to see everyone improve and drop time in their events!” said Kali Nanavaty, Class of 2019.

The Lancers knew this would be a hard match because of the size difference in the teams. The Urbana team combined boys and girls has 57, and Linganore has 25.

This year swimmers on club teams joined the team, adding expertise and enthusiasm.

The next meets are December 13 at Walkersville v. Tuscarora and Decmeber 17 at Walkersville v. Walkersville.
