On October 29, Varsity cheerleading took first place at the 2018 Frederick County Championship, which was held at Governor Thomas Johnson High. They also placed first at their previous invitationals at Westminster and Frederick Scott Key High School. JV also took first place at all three competitions.

“I think we win because we have a lot of energy.  We are a fun team to watch.  Also, we have a high level of difficulty–it gives us an edge,” said Catie Jo Tansey, a senior cheerleader.

This is varsity cheerleading’s tenth year in a row winning Counties. Varsity scored a 124.6 with zero deductions.

They competed against Brunswick, Oakdale, Urbana,  Governor Thomas Johnson, Middletown, and Frederick. Middletown placed third and Urbana placed second.

As of right now, Varsity has the highest score in the 3A/4A West which will allow them to advance to regionals in the number one ranked spot.

“Every year is a little different because you have to overcome different obstacles on the way with different team dynamics. Although winning is awesome, watching your girls perform is really what it’s all about. When you see them hit the mat and perform their very best, there is nothing better,” said Varsity cheer coach Amy Rumburg.

The team has been practicing consistently 4-5 days a week for 3 hours each day. Many of them take additional tumbling lessons and three of them do All Star cheer as well as high school cheer. The coaches intentionally spent a lot of time in the early part of the season conditioning to get the girls’ bodies prepared for the impact of a fast-paced routine.

“Winning counties was such a great experience and I hope we can all come together as a team and pull out another win at regionals,” said junior Madi Lindung.
