On November 17th from 7 – 11 a.m., the Kiwanis Club of Mt. Airy put on a pancake breakfast at Calvary United Methodist Church located at Good Shepherd Hall.

The Kiwanis Club of Mt. Airy was first chartered in 1949 by the combined efforts of three area clubs: Taneytown,  Westminster, and Ellicott City. Kiwanis is a citizen-led and run organization that specializes in assisting and supporting local projects in the community. Key Club and Kiwanis are very similar groups; they help each other with various fundings and volunteers.

Students from Key Club signed up for hourly time slots to volunteer. Key Club members assisted in washing dishes, setting up and putting away tables and chairs, and refilling drinks.

Key Club Treasurer Charlotte Moore had this to say about the pancake breakfast, “Pancake breakfast is a great way to see both the young and old working together and to see the community come out to support service organizations.”

Santa Claus came down the chimney to greet to all the boys and girls and take photos.

The Kiwanis Club served all-you-can-eat pancakes, eggs, & Wagner’s sausage. They also had refreshments like juice, milk, coffee, and tea. Key Club members worked on keeping the drink disposals refiled and chilled.

All of the proceeds raised go to benefit local community projects and events.

Kiwanis encouraged people to bring non-perishable food items for the Mt. Airy Net food drive at Calvary United Methodist Church.

Key Club member Caroline Etherton has this to say about the pancake breakfast, “It went really well and it was fun to do service with friends even when we got the knife stuck in the garbage disposal.”

Key Club is all about volunteering and raising awareness. Key Club is collecting soda tabs to give to the Ronald McDonald house. We collect tabs because they are made out of different quality aluminum. They are also easier for charities to handle in large volumes.
