Today in African American History Month, we recognize Garrett Morgan, who created a safety hood and smoke protector for firefighters around 1911. After hearing about deaths in the historic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, Morgan created the hood, using a wet sponge to cool the air and filter out smoke.

This invention lead to the modern gas mask. Morgan also invented the hand-crank mechanical signal machine for traffic crossing, which improved the traffic light by providing a caution period. Unfortunately, for Morgan to sell his invention, he had to hire a white male actor to pretend he was the inventor because people wouldn’t buy it from a black man. So today, let’s remember and be thankful for the inventions created by Garrett Morgan that we still use to this day.
