On March 11, Linganore’s Gay Straight Alliance club held their second annual dance in support of the LGBT community. With the success of last year’s first dance, the group welcomed students from Governor Thomas Johnson High School’s GSA to attend as well.

GSA students collected donations for the Trevor Project. The Trevor Project is a non-profit organization that helps prevent suicide among LGBT students and members of the community as a whole. Those who bought a ticket to the dance, or donated money at lunch during the week leading up to the dance, received an orange bracelet that reads “I supported the Trevor Project. 2017.”

This year, the GSA got record breaking donations for the Trevor Project and the dance, receiving $291.37 in only four days. While on Friday the 12th alone, $95.57 was collected through out all three lunch shifts. On Thursday the 11th, $88.47 was raised as well.

“It was super fun to come together as a club and have our own dance,” said club member and sophomore Jillian Kolesar.

The dance itself was ’60’s themed, with lava lamps and vinyl records used for decorations. Flowery peace signs were taped onto the doors and walls of the cafeteria. There was also a photo booth section, where each background you could choose was painted by members of the GSA clubs. With fun and silly props, the photos were given a classic ’60’s vibe as the photographers used Polaroid cameras, where the photos actually needed time to develop like they used to.

The music was great as well, with Ms. Andrea Poffinberger as the DJ. She muted sections of songs while students screamed the lyrics in chorus. It was kind of like a five-second round of karaoke at random points in the night.

A combination of great people, great music, and a great cause came together to make a great dance for the LGBT community and its supporters.
