The LHS art department took a field trip to The National Gallery of Art for a first-hand look at the work of the masters. Christian Madenspacher lead the field trip. The students left school at 9:00am, and returned at 5:45pm.

Gus Gussel said, “the National Gallery is a great place to look at and learn about all kinds of art. It’s really neat.”

The National Gallery of Art is located in Washington, D.C. This national treasure was created by Andrew W. Mellon.

Mellon wrote to President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936 and asked the President for his entire art collection to be stored in a museum.

After Congress’s approval, construction began in 1937 on the National Mall near the foot of Capitol Hill.

The gallery’s collection includes nearly 4,000 paintings, 3,000 sculptures, 70,000 historic prints, and around 31,000 drawings.

To this day The National Gallery of Art is a historical and cultural attraction
