On Tuesdays and Thursdays students practice in Ms. Jamie Hendi’s room to prepare for the upcoming mock trial competitions. Students are divided into two sides, defense and prosecution.

This year’s case is similar to the Flint Michigan case, which is still under investigation today. The prosecution team is attempting to show that a superintendent of schools, with her entire school board, knew that the school system’s water had tested for high levels of lead, but allowed the water to flow freely anyway.

The defense is trying to prove that the Superintendent had no knowledge of the substantial harm the lead would cause.

This year’s prosecution team is comprised of Grace Weaver, Michael Zerr, MaKenzie Llewellyn, Cat Detrick, Brenna Lindsey and Sofia Schuller.

The defense team includes, Sarah Brady, Jack Adams, Garret Gillipsse, Alyson Sniffen, Emily Alberson and Timothy Hopkins.

Each team competes three time during the season, and the defense will go first against Urbana on January 10, 2017. If you would like to come watch the team compete, you have to be at the Frederick County Courthouse by 5 o’clock.  The courthouse doors are locked at 5 p.m.

“The only thing we are guilty of is guilty of awesome,” said Michael Zerr.

Mrs. Susan Peterson has joined Mrs. Jamie Hendi as co-advisers. The Honorable Kathleen Chapman, a current judge, also attends some practices and gives the team support.

“Both of our advisers are past lawyers which gives us an edge over the other teams,” said Grace Weaver.

Last year’s team went to regional competition.  It was mock trial’s first time advancing that far in the competition.
